Benjamin is telling Edwin that he will be in NY and that Mr. Partridge invited him. He would like to see Edwin while he is here. Mrs. Markham told me you were in California. Had i known i would have asked you to put in a kind word for me.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
